Twice the Appeal, disqualified in his prior start, made the most of a second chance when he collared Astrology near mid-stretch en route to a 1 1/2-length victory in the $800,000 Sunland Derby (gr. III) in New Mexico. Such is the nature of the trail to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum Brands (gr. I) that the 25-1 shot Twice the Appeal, heretofore unmentioned by the experts, jumps all the way into the top 10 on the graded earnings list with the $400,000 first prize. Graded earnings are used to determine preference for a spot in the starting gate for the Run for the Roses May 7. APRIL 25....Barn has been en fuego as of late, but the Sunland Derby winner is a big outsider here. APRIL 27.....Calvin Borel, who has ridden the Kentucky Derby winner three of the last four years, finally picked up a mount, Twice the Appeal, for the Derby on May 7. APRIL 29....Borel aboard a Derby longshot from Sunland, sound familiar? Won't be the longest shot on the board now. APRIL 30....Twice the Appeal went the distance in 1:15 3/5. Twice the Appeal, took to the track well when he went out with jockey Calvin Borel aboard shortly after training began at 6 a.m. EDT.
